The latest season of Tribal Police Files was filmed in the Tsuut’ina Nation located just outside of Calgary, Alberta,  and will be available in the Tsuut’ina language when it premieres. Tsuut’ina Elder Bruce Starlight offered his transcription skills to the final season.  The 13 half-hour episodes will take us into the heart-stopping and challenging world of tribal police officers on the frontlines of the Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service.  Tribal Police Files follows the officers as they put their lives on the line to keep their communities safe, healthy and proud.

Steve Sxwithul’txw of OCM 3 Productions is from the Penelakut Tribe.  As a former police officer from British Columbia, Sxwithul’txw has a unique perspective and unprecedented access to the community of the Tsuut’ina Nation.

Working with cameras in any community can be a challenge, but seeing the final result, we are so pleased with its outcome and are grateful for the opportunity to work in the Tsuut’ina Nation with these fine, dedicated police officers,” said Sxwithul’txw.

First Nation policing in Canada has a unique history and has been in practice since the 1990s. An important part of self-determination for Indigenous Peoples is to have their own police agencies and justice systems that are centered around their community and cultural traditions.

Working in this policing environment poses numerous challenges and requires distinctive training, compassion and patience with the First Nations communities involved in order to successfully defuse complex situations.

The Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service is proud to have been provided the opportunity for APTN viewers to witness the outstanding work of the women and men of Tosguna,” said Chief Keith Blake of the Tsuut’ina Police. “Our officers and staff have dedicated themselves to the safety and wellbeing of our community and we look forward to taking you on a remarkable journey through the stories that have impacted the lives of our community members and officers.”

Unlike traditional cop shows, Tribal Police Files  uniquely balances police interaction with community members, showcases the police officers’ personal lives and highlights the beauty of Indigenous culture and traditional lands. Viewers will ride along with the officers as they respond to calls, not knowing the challenges that lie ahead. Tribal Police Files recognizes the police officers’ incredible work and instills pride, healing and strength in its communities.
